Fifty years ago, the village of St-Prex in Switzerland received the prestigious Prix Wakker, honouring both the preservation of its historic built heritage and the remarkable efforts of its residents to showcase it. In 2023, the time had come to celebrate this milestone in style and bring the community together around a unifying project.

Janette Danko, from the Reg’arts Saint-Prex association, came up with the idea of incorporating Genius Loci connected medals into the project and successfully ignited the Municipality’s enthusiasm — enabling the first medals to be deployed in record time.

The platform was up and running immediately, but with tight deadlines, high-quality content had to be produced quickly for these first medals. St-Prex commissioned Ariane Mérillat, anthropologist and researcher at UNIL in Lausanne, to write texts that were both thoroughly researched and genuinely compelling. Her partner Bastien, a photographer, brought the secrets of the place to life with striking, high-quality images.

By interviewing long-time residents, Janette, Ariane and Bastien gathered original anecdotes and shared them in a modern, accessible format through the Genius Loci medals.

AboutGenius Loci

2,000 years ago, the Romans believed every place was protected by a Genius Loci, the spirit of place.

Today, “genius loci” refers to the unique atmosphere of a place – its character, its history. The term is particularly used in architecture.

We have built on this idea to create a tool for showcasing and digitising heritage – driven by citizens themselves.

Founded in Switzerland by the designers of Design Sprint Ltd, Genius Loci SA finally makes hyperlocal destinations attractive. Truly affordable for municipalities, associations and local authorities.
