Mission
To build the cultural heritage network that helps territories let their identity shine and tell their local stories in a participatory way.
Vision
To inspire deep, authentic tourism that brings life back to territories and regions.
What is Genius Loci?
Accelerated by MIT DesignX, Genius Loci is a Swiss startup active in Heritage and Tourism.
Genius Loci Medals are a tool for showcasing local heritage, both physical and digital.
For each place:
- Durable signage (316L stainless-steel medal)
- A dedicated digital space (web app)
Content is created by the institutions that own the medals (municipalities, tourist offices, associations…). As the developer of the tool, Genius Loci SA does not create the content.
What problems do you solve?
Europe welcomes more than 700 million visitors every year — over 50% of global tourism.
What are they looking for? What makes Europe so unique: its History and Heritage! Castles, historic towns and villages, palaces, cathedrals and churches, not to mention exceptional natural sites and tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
More than 500 European sites are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Colosseum, Mont-Saint-Michel…
One major problem is that these exceptional sites concentrate the bulk of mass tourism, even overtourism… Yet more than 200,000 towns, villages and localities across Europe are full of treasures worth showcasing and remain largely unknown.
In the age of slow tourism, we want to invite international and domestic visitors to travel less far, but more deeply. Through our international network of connected Medals revealing the secrets of our regions in detail.
For municipalities, tourist offices and local authorities, Genius Loci offers an alternative to tourist panels suited to today’s world: digital, cost-effective, collaborative and sustainable.
Risks linked to artificial intelligence
As generative artificial intelligence becomes the new interface for accessing information (voice assistants, search engines, enriched maps…), a major risk emerges for territories: seeing their public image manufactured automatically from generic, outdated or erroneous data. Without proactive intervention, standardised, decontextualised or even false narratives can replace local voices.
Local authorities must take back control of their places’ narratives today. By structuring their own Deep POI, they create a reliable, rich, grounded editorial resource that can feed tomorrow’s AI, platforms and discovery interfaces — from a controlled, chosen, validated source.
Genius Loci offers territories a concrete solution to avoid dilution of their identity in automated digital flows, and to become authors of their stories, not spectators.
Genius Loci is a new discovery experience combining Heritage and Innovation. Our vision? To make it the best large-scale heritage enhancement tool.
What is your business model?
Mainly B2G (Business to Government). Our clients — local authorities or tourist offices — order medals and set up their own enhancement project. The end beneficiary is the visitor or tourist who will discover our medals in context, enriching their experience of exploring a region.
What is Genius Loci's market positioning?
Genius Loci positions itself as official municipal heritage infrastructure, where other solutions are either playful apps (Terra Aventura, Totemus, Geocaching) or generalist platforms (Google Maps, Wikipedia, TripAdvisor).
Not a game, not an animation, not yet another app: lasting signage carried by the municipality itself.
A network of bolted stainless-steel medals, an instant scan with no download, and each place becomes a Deep POI told in the territory’s own voice. Genius Loci fills a gap: that of durable, sober, universal infrastructure, steered by the municipality.
Who are your clients?
Heritage architects, cultural mediators, museum curators, art restorers, art historians, archaeologists, urban planners, city architects, exhibition designers, historians, geographers, cultural organisations and institutions, ministries, Regional Directorates of Cultural Affairs (DRAC), private or public foundations working to preserve and showcase cultural heritage, tourist offices, municipalities, heritage conservation associations.
Who are your investors?
As a spin-off of Design Sprint SA,
Genius Loci SA is still 100% owned by Stéph Cruchon and Eglé Cruchon. For future fundraising, we plan to prioritise state investors and family offices that not only show genuine interest in our sector, but also share our strategic objectives.
