Episode 12 of Genius Loci the Story!Stéph and Professor Stéphane Lecorney of HEIG-vd present the new Smapshot x Genius Loci feature

A few months ago, at the Memoriav fair in Solothurn, Stéphane Lecorney, Associate Professor at HEIG-vd, approached Genius Loci as part of an Innosuisse partnership. The idea is simple: showcase nearly 400,000 georeferenced photos on the Smapshot platform "The participative Time Machine".When a place has been geolocated in Genius Loci, Smapshot's open-source images can be integrated in one click. Particular effort went into automatic source citation and backlinks.A fine example of collaboration with a university of applied sciences! Thanks to HEIG-VD.

AboutGenius Loci

2,000 years ago, the Romans believed every place was protected by a Genius Loci, the spirit of place.

Today, “genius loci” refers to the unique atmosphere of a place — its character, its history. The term is particularly used in architecture.

We have taken up this idea to turn it into a tool for showcasing and digitising heritage, driven by citizens themselves.

Founded in Switzerland by the designers of Design Sprint Ltd, Genius Loci SA finally makes hyperlocal destinations attractive, at a cost that is genuinely accessible to municipalities, associations and local authorities.
